Two Minutes Of Silence
Neil Finn/Mark Hart/Nick Seymour/Matt Sherrod

Well I still can’t be sure if my brothers are dead
I was running up behind them and now I’m covered in blood
Well last night I prayed to my God, let me live
And he left me with a mission that I will never forget

After they’re gone
A heavy silence on the hill
Billions of stars
Reflecting on the ocean still
Like any other night

Like a shadow man I am drifting and stumbling around
But I’d rather be standing than dead on the ground

They told us the enemy was ….
But they never said …

Empty shell
Buried underneath the hill
Billions of stars
Reflecting on the ocean still
Like any other night
(Like any other night)
Any other night

Dreaming in the silence
It’s nothing we can talk about
No one but a soldier

I saw the light

We live to fight
Another day
Another day

We observed the two minutes of silence in the studio after the Christchurch earthquake. That was really touching. I had never been in a situation like that. When we were in the recording studio, ordinarily we would be isolated in this kind of life support bubble - it’s like being in outer space when you’re in a recording studio - and it was suggested that we observe the two minutes of silence that the whole of New Zealand was observing in memoriam of the awful tragedy of the Christchurch earthquake. The song was performed just after we had done that.

This song arose out of a period of jamming in 2011 with Nick Launay and it has lot of atmosphere I think. I finished Two Minutes Of Silence with a view towards it being used for a drama series about Anzac Day in 2015. It didn’t end up happening but its final lyrics are very much in honour of that historical event.
