Stare Me Out
Neil Finn

There’s a lizard crawling from a hole in the ground
He could see us coming every which way around
And his eyes were bugging
All that kissing and hugging and the tears coming down
You can stare me out

Sad for me
But smiling
Upon this Earth
I told him
Do anything you want
Your life is yours to own

There’s a praying mantis on the piano now
And he’s looking straight at me like he’s digging the sound
Now he’s moving his head with all the lights going red
I’m sure I’ve seen him before
I’ve been through his door
You can stare me out

You’re holding me
So tight
You’re telling me
It’s alright
It’s like a restaurant
Where you can abuse the waiters
Harmonise with your mum
Groove with your apron on

You could always stare me out
After all this time you can stare me out

Always stare me out
Always stare me out…

Song appears on:

Crowded House - Time On Earth vinyl edition (2007) and Deluxe Edition (2016)

Previously available on Single:

That song is Elroy’s debut as an electric guitarist, and in fact that very prominent solo on there is the very first played in his life. He did it on the floor, live with the rhythm track and added a little bit afterwards, so it means a lot to me, that moment. It’s an explosive moment where he proved that he’s got a bit of latent Hendrix genealogy in there somewhere,. It’s high energy.

Stare Me Out (alternative version)
Neil Finn

True enough to know me
For the kind of man I could be
Far too often disappointed
By the way I let things go

I can’t get drunk on sarsaparilla
So I find another barman
No one’s safe without protection
Cruel sun on head below

You could always
Stare me out
After all this time you can
Stare me out
You can stare me out
Always stare me out
You can stare me out

You can tame the wild ocean
Be eclipsed by seven suns
I don’t care if you don’t buy it
I declare the ice age come

You could always
Stare me out
After all this time you can
Stare me out
Always stare me out
You can stare me out
Always stare me out

It took a while to get me
To admit I wasn’t perfect
But the truth is slowly dawning
That I’m not the only one

You can stare me out
Always stare me out
You can stare me out
Always stare me out
Always stare me out
