Recurring Dream
Neil Finn/Paul Hester/Nick Seymour/Craig Hooper

Within myself
There are a million things
Spilling over
Falling out into a silent stream

Feel the warm wind touch me
Hear the waters crashing
See my windows wiping clean
It’s my recurring dream

Within myself
A secret world returns
Over and over
Where the white flame of desire burns

Feel the warm wind touch me
Hear the waters crashing
See my windows wiping clean
It’s my recurring dream

Within myself
There are a million things
Feel the warm wind touch me
Hear the waters crashing
See my windows wiping clean

It’s my recurring dream

Recurring Dream began life in pre-Crowded House band, The Mullanes.

The Mullanes: Nick Seymour, Craig Hooper, Paul Hester, Neil Finn

Song appears on:

Version 2: Crowded House - Afterglow (Compilation album 1999)

Live acoustic version: Fangradio 27 April 2020

We have to give Craig Hooper a lot of credit for Recurring Dream because the two guitar part that we had was very much him and me at rehearsals in a jammy kind of mode. We were rehearsing at Factory Sound in South Melbourne. We wrote it there and might have recorded a demo of it there as well, and then we did another demo some other time. We actually tried it again at some session on Ocean Way or Sunset Sound in LA but it never made it.
— Neil Finn

‘Hoedown’ was the working title for the instrumental version recorded by Nick, Paul and Neil with producer Mitchell Froom in Los Angeles in 1985/86. This remains unreleased.

Perversely, Recurring Dream didn’t appear on the Recurring Dream 1996 greatest hits compilation, instead being issued under the radar as a bonus track on the Instinct CD single.
