Now We’re Getting Somewhere
Neil Finn

It never used to be that bad
But neither was it great
Somewhere in the middle than
Content and much too safe
Ooh tell me please
Why it takes so long
To realise when there’s something wrong

Lay me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Take me out let me breathe
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
When I’m with you I don’t care
Where it is I’m falling

There’s money in the Bible belt
Hugs for daddy too
Three wishes for eternity
We’ve got some work to do
Ooh tell me please, tell me what went wrong
Cause I believe there is something wrong

Lay me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Take me out let me breathe
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
When I’m with you I don’t care
Where it is I’m falling

When you took me to your room
I swear I said surrender
When you opened up your mouth
I saw the words fall out
Though nothing much has changed
I swear I will surrender
There is pain in my heart
We can choose what we choose to believe

We were an unknown quantity, other than Neil, of course, but Paul and I were very much a rhythm section that Mitchell felt was a bit pub ragged. And we were. Paul was under a lot of pressure to deliver drum tracks at that time, and arced up a few times over it, more to himself. He was bitterly disappointed when Mitchell got Jim Keltner in that time to do that drum track.

But also I think that the session with Jim and Jerry Scheff was so much fun that everyone actually had a really good time. It was valuable for everyone to see how the old masters swing and we were a much better band for that.

Now We’re Getting Somewhere (studio demo)
Neil Finn

Well you know who I am but I know you don’t give a damn
I saw you on your own last night
My hands were wet and might stomach was tight
Well I knew what to say but the spelling got me all confused
You can imagine my relief when your telex number came through

Lay me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we’re gettin’ some place
Take me out let me breathe
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
When I’m with you I don’t care
Where it is I’m falling

Well I know what you do but it feels too good to be true
Come back to the sanctuary bed and play it like a tune in my head
Well I mean what I say but that don’t say what I mean, no
Whatever it is that you believe, the opposite is equally true

Knock me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we’re gettin’ some place
Take me out let me breathe
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
When I’m with you I don’t care
Where it is I’m falling

Well I know what you do but it feels so good to be true
Come back to the sanctuary bed and play it like a tune in my head
Well I mean what I say but that don’t say what I mean
Whatever it is that you believe, the opposite is equally true

Lay me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we’re gettin’ some place
(Take me out, let me breathe)
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere
When I’m with you I don’t care
Where it is I’m falling
Lay me out
Oh
Well lay me out with your heart
Now we’re gettin’ somewhere

Mitchell liked the chorus and didn’t really like the verse of the original song so we we started looking for another verse. Just another example of things that go through quite a major transformation.

Stranger Underneath Your Skin (home demo)
Neil Finn

It never used to be that bad
The sun would light your way
The morning promises all it can
But now you sit and watch the daylight fade

Ooh tell me please
Tell me what went wrong
I never knew when you were laughing then
I thought you had it all in your head
I thought you had it all in your head

When you entrusted yourself to him
A dangerous thing to do
’Cause in return
He was supposed to enslave himself
Turn his head into a shrine for you

Ooh tell me please
Tell me what went wrong
I never knew when you were laughing then
I thought you had it all in your head
Tell me please
Tell me what went wrong
And when I touch you, don’t feel the same
’Cause there’s a stranger underneath your skin
And there’s a stranger underneath your skin

So come on let the sunshine in
This house is old and grey, oh
But now you know how the real world is
Fighting each and every single day

Ah tell me please
Tell me what went wrong
I never knew when you were laughing then
I thought you had it all in your head
Hold me please
Hold me all night long
And if I touch you will it feel the same
’Cause there’s a stranger underneath my skin
