It’s Only Natural
Neil Finn/Tim Finn

Ice will melt, water will boil
You and I can shake off this mortal coil
It’s bigger than us
You don’t have to worry about it
Ready or not here comes the drop
You feel lucky when you know where you are
It’s gonna come true
Here in your arms I remember

It’s only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It’s only natural that you should
Feel the same way too

It’s easy when you don’t try
Going on first impressions
Man in a cage has made his confession
You’ve seen me at my worst
And it won’t be the last time I’m down there
I want you to know I feel completely at ease
Read me like a book
That’s fallen down between your knees
Please let me have my way with you

It’s only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It’s only natural that you should
Feel the same way too

It’s circumstantial, it’s nothing written in the sky
And we don’t even have to try
Shaking like mud, buildings of glass
Sink into the bay they’ll be under the rocks again
You don’t have to say I know you’re afraid

It’s only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It’s only natural that you should
Feel the same way too

It’s circumstantial, it’s something I was born to
It’s only natural, can’t help it if I want to

It’s Only Natural [melody] was Tim’s chorus, my verse. They just seemed to go well together.

We wrote the lyric on the spot. We were talking a lot, at that time, about subatomic particles and quarks. There’s two songs around that time - we wrote another one called Strangeness and Charm, and they were both named quarks. It’s Only Natural - the first verse was very much influenced by that conversation as well. The rubbing together of spirituality and science.
— Neil Finn, Woodface Great Australian Album documentary, 2007.
It’s Only Natural is a good title because Tim’s inclusion in the band in the end came together very naturally. Although Crowded House had begun to record an entire album before we decided to include Tim, what happened was that the songs that Tim and I had written demanded to be done and they started to be included on the Crowded House record. Pretty soon Tim was there and pretty soon we were doing gigs with him.

It became very obvious to all of us that the album would be very strong with both Tim and the songs he and I had written, that it would be far less schizophrenic than it was when we were planning two records - a duo record and a Crowded House record. When we were going to release them was becoming a nightmare, so it’s been good for everybody.
